Fighting For My Family: How To Talk To Kids About Sex: Proverbs 5

1. Take responsibility for your kids

My son, pay attention to my wisdom; listen carefully to my wise counsel.  Then you will learn to be discreet and will store up knowledge.
Proverbs 5:1-2 (NLT)

2. Train your kids to run from temptation

The lips of an immoral woman are as sweet as honey, and her mouth is smoother than oil.  But the result is as bitter as poison, sharp as a double-edged sword.  Her feet go down to death; her steps lead straight to the grave.  For she does not care about the path to life. She staggers down a crooked trail and doesn’t even realize where it leads. So now, my sons, listen to me. Never stray from what I am about to say:  Run from her! Don’t go near the door of her house!
Proverbs 5:3-8 (NLT)

Can a man scoop fire into his lap without his clothes being burned? Can a man walk on hot coals without his feet being scorched? So is he who sleeps with another man’s wife; no one who touches her will go unpunished.
Proverbs 6:27-29 (NIV)

3. Talk to your kids about consequences of sexual sin

A.  Keep your wealth

Strangers will obtain your wealth, and someone else will enjoy the fruit of your labor.
Proverbs 5:10 (NLT)

B.  Uphold your health

Afterward you will groan in anguish when disease consumes your body.
Proverbs 5:11 (NLT)

C. Value your reputation

I have come to the brink of utter ruin, and now I must face public disgrace.”
Proverbs 5:14 (NLT)

D. Don’t leave God out

But the man who commits adultery is an utter fool, for he destroys himself.
Proverbs 6:32 (NLT)

4. Teach your kids to thrive in marriage

Drink water from your own well—share your love only with your wife.  Why spill the water of your springs in public, having sex with just anyone?  You should reserve it for yourselves. Don’t share it with strangers.  Let your wife be a fountain of blessing for you. Rejoice in the wife of your youth.  She is a loving doe, a graceful deer. Let her breasts satisfy you always. May you always be captivated by her love.  Why be captivated, my son, with an immoral woman, or embrace the breasts of an adulterous woman?  For the LORD sees clearly what a man does, examining every path he takes.  An evil man is held captive by his own sins; they are ropes that catch and hold him.  He will die for lack of self-control; he will be lost because of his incredible folly.
Proverbs 5:15-23 (NLT)

Should your springs overflow in the streets, your streams of water in the public squares?
Proverbs 5:16 (NIV)

May your fountain be blessed, and may you rejoice in the wife of your youth.
Proverbs 5:18 (NIV)

A loving doe, a graceful deer–may her breasts satisfy you always, may you ever be captivated by her love.
Proverbs 5:19 (NIV)

Fighting For My Family: The Family Table: Colossians 3:15-21

Let’s look at the four chairs of the family…

1. The God Chair—God Leads

And let the peace of Christ, to which you were also called in one body, rule your hearts. And be thankful. 16 Let the word of Christ dwell richly among you, in all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another through psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. 17 And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
Colossians 3:15-17 (CSB)

2. The Wife Chair—She Supports

Wives, submit yourselves to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.
Colossians 3:18 (CSB)

Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.
Ephesians 5:21 (NIV)

But I want you to know that Christ is the head of every man, and the man is the head of the woman, and God is the head of Christ.
1 Corinthians 11:3 (CSB)

3. The Husband/Dad Chair—He Loves and Encourages

Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them.
Colossians 3:19 (NIV)

In the same way, husbands are to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.
Ephesians 5:28 (CSB)

Fathers, do not exasperate your children, so that they won’t become discouraged.
Colossians 3:21 (CSB)

Fathers, don’t stir up anger in your children, but bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.
Ephesians 6:4 (CSB)

4. The Kid Chair—They Obey

Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.
Colossians 3:20 (CSB)

Children, obey your parents in the Lord, because this is right. 2 Honor your father and mother, which is the first commandment with a promise, 3 so that it may go well with you and that you may have a long life in the land.
Ephesians 6:1-3 (CSB)

Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Give careful thought to do what is honorable in everyone’s eyes.
Romans 12:17 (CSB)

2.  Pursuing Peace

If possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.
Romans 12:18 (CSB)

3.  Trusting God

Friends, do not avenge yourselves; instead, leave room for God’s wrath, because it is written, Vengeance belongs to me; I will repay, says the Lord.
Romans 12:19 (CSB)

When the disciples James and John saw this, they said, “Lord, do You want us to call down fire from heaven to consume them?”

But If your enemy is hungry, feed him. If he is thirsty, give him something to drink. For in so doing you will be heaping fiery coals on his head.

5.  Overcoming Evil

Do not be conquered by evil, but conquer evil with good.

2. HE’S POWERFUL ENOUGH TO HEAL YOU

As Jesus went on from there, two blind men followed him, calling out, “Have mercy on us, Son of David!” 28 When he entered the house, the blind men approached him, and Jesus said to them, “Do you believe that I can do this?” They said to him, “Yes, Lord.”29 Then he touched their eyes, saying, “Let it be done for you according to your faith.”

unCERTAIN: God Is Always With Me: Jeremiah 23:24; Psalm 139:7-12; Hebrews 13:5-6

I am a God who is everywhere and not in one place. Do you not know that I am everywhere in heaven and on earth?
Jeremiah 23:24 (GN)

Where can I go to escape Your Spirit? Where can I flee from Your presence? 8 If I go up to heaven, You are there; if I make my bed in Sheol, You are there.
Psalm 139:7-8 (CSB)

For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 8:38-39 (CSB)

If I live at the eastern horizon [or] settle at the western limits,10 even there Your hand will lead me; Your right hand will hold on to me.
Psalm 139:9-10 (CSB)

If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me, and the light around me will become night” 12even the darkness is not dark to You. The night shines like the day; darkness and light are alike to You.
Psalm 139:11-12 (CSB)

God’s Presence…
1. Comforts Me When I’m Afraid

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you, and the rivers will not overwhelm you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be scorched, and the flame will not burn you.

Psalm 16:8-9 (GN)

God’s Presence…
2. Helps Me When I’m In Need

Keep your life free from the love of money. Be satisfied with what you have, for he himself has said, I will never leave you or abandon you. 6 Therefore, we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?
Hebrews 13:5-6 (CSB)

I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?
Hebrews 13:5-6 (CSB)

I don’t say this out of need, for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I find myself. 12 I know how to make do with little, and I know how to make do with a lot. In any and all circumstances I have learned the secret of being content—whether well fed or hungry, whether in abundance or in need. 13 I am able to do all things through him who strengthens me.
Philippians 4:12-13 (CSB)

God’s Presence…
3. Empowers Me When I’m Tempted

No temptation has come upon you except what is common to humanity. But God is faithful; he will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation he will also provide the way out so that you may be able to bear it.
